Jewellery Making Process
The creation of such a necklace involves several distinct stages, from casting the components to achieving the signature blackened finish.
- Design & Components: The necklace features multiple coin-like pendants (often called ginni) attached to an intricate, decorative base. These components can be cast from 925 sterling silver or more affordable alloys like German Silver (a mix of copper, zinc, and nickel).
- Casting: To create uniform coins, a wax mold is often used. Molten metal replaces the wax in a process called "lost-wax casting". Alternatively, real vintage coins are sometimes drilled and repurposed into jewelry.
- Assembly: The individual coins are linked to a central band using small jump rings or by soldering them directly to a flexible metal framework.
- Oxidization: The signature "antique" finish is achieved by treating the finished piece with a chemical solution—most commonly liver of sulfur. This causes a reaction that turns the surface black or dark gray.
- Polishing: Finally, the piece is selectively polished. The dark oxidation remains in the recessed areas of the design, while the raised parts are buffed to a shine, highlighting the intricate details.
